ABOUT RETHYMNO PREFECTURE
The smaller prefecture of Crete, Rethymno, demonstrates shocking natural beauties, marvelous beaches, scattered antiquities and historical monasteries, until traditionally mountainous villages and seasonal settlements.
The capital and harbour of prefecture, the city of Rethymno, are found in the northern side of island and the Mainer wealth-producing sources are the tourism, the olives, the oil and the livestock farming. It was the centre of art and culture with particular cultural blossoming the 16th and 17 th century.
You should visit Fortezza, the impressive castle that dominates in Palaiokastro hill which it was built up in 1573 from Venetians. In the castle apart from the rampant and circular viewpoints, you will see also the church of Agios Nikolaos that changed Turks in Pane and distinguish of course because oversized dome. You will see also, the deposition of artillery, next from the castle, where it functions as exhibition space and accommodates the Archaeological Museum. The square of Plastira, in the harbour, bring up all that there are found there, with many bars and clubs that takes off and occasionally lands the nightly lifetime of city.
Interesting neoclassic buildings in the modern settlement you will find in the Metropolitan Palace and in the Metropolitan temple of Eisodion of Virgin Mary, that is found precisely opposite. Beautiful is the beach in Matala , where was the "Mekka" of hippies decade 1960-1970 but also the next solitary beach of Red Sand.
